U.S. Broadband Connection Speeds a Slow 2.3 MbpsDate: Wed, 13. August 2008 16:45:16
Broadband Internet connection speeds in the United States are simply bush league compared to the rest of the globe. The U.S. ranks 15th globally, behind South Korea, Finland and Japan. Maybe that's why U.S. broadband growth declined precipitously in Q2 as telco broadband providers AT T, Verizon and Qwest see new high-speed connections plunge. Cable broadband providers Comcast and Time Warner fare better but still suffer serious slowdown in new hookups. - While the cell phone businesswith the notable exception of Motorola--seems to be booming in the United States, the broadband business is not. Two new reports claim broadband providers suffered serious declines in new second quarter subscribers and those that already subscribe to high-speed services...

Intel, the worlds largest producer of x86 processors for desktops, laptops and server systems, will now appeal a ruling in South Korea that found the company had abused its powerful position in the worldwide chip market. In its appeal, Intel counters that it did not use its market position to force PC vendors to buy its chips instead of processors made by AMD. Intel is also facing antitrust allegations in Europe and the United States.br/ -

Gustav Blows Obama Off NAFTA MessageDate: Tue, 2. September 2008 18:12:52
Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's memo promises to renegotiate North American Free Trade Agreement to include enforceable labor and environmental clauses. Republican presidential nominee John McCain remains opposed to any NAFTA renegotiations, calling Barack Obama's stance protectionist. Since he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Obama has supported the Peru Free Trade Agreement while opposing deals with Panama, Columbia and South Korea. McCain has supported all of the free trade agreements. - Hurricane Gustav forced Barack Obama to drop his Sept. 1 message to labor groups that he wants to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, a controversial position that Obama pushed early in his campaign for the Democratic nomination but virtually ignored in his Aug. 28 acceptance speech...
